I held off a day on uploading this. Talking about feeding maggots to chickens didn't seem appropriate for christmas day.

What a great idea! I have a ton of those fly catchers with the yellow lids, well they all ended up with loads of magots in them and I was a little concerned they would escape as flys again so tipped the lot back to the chooks - they LOVED them! Problem solved!
Another good one, thanks Paul. Is there an optimal size for the holes do you think?
Yep i've noticed this as well. Clever of that guy to turn it into a system.
I was sure I replied earlier ...
Half inch or bigger holes are what I suggest. Anything smaller gets into that surface tension of water stuff and can be problematic.
Ta.
I have used this method for raising maggots and it works great. Just a 5 gallon bucket with lid and holes in the bottom and sides (toward the bottom). Meat works best but vegetable scraps are good fillers. It's funny, Iv'e never had problems with bears, coyotes or foxes either.
This is a great way to supplement feed and lower cost. The chickens go absolutely crazy over the little grubs too. The only drawback... It stinks...pretty bad at times.
I make a fly catcher out of a 2 litre bottle with a few holes about 3/5 of the way down.Flys can get in but not out
Put in some water and prawn heads and you could empty nearly a litre of dead flys and maggots a week to your chooks
Soldier flys are good too
They dont irritate you and they self harves as well as break down meat and other things you dont put in worm farms or compost bins
This is a commercial version of it but you could make your own
