Can anybody help me to id these two weeds please?
Would I be right in thinking that the first is some kind of sorghum?
Could the second be a species of spurge.

top one is a bit hard without the leaves but could be rumex vesicarius
second one grows like mad here but have not bothered id yet will ask around
At a glance, the first one looks like 'Dock', of which there are a few different genus/species (and probably hundreds of differing colloquialisms for the same) in the Polygonaceae family:
Yours appears to be of the Rumex genus:
Be warned, the above (last) taxa database is huge!
Bit hard to tell exactly what yours is, without all the identifiers to key it out. But by following the above (as a guide), I'm sure you will work it out for yourself.
Certain species of Dock are good to eat raw or blanched in salads, or steeped for 20-minutes they make a nice tea.
Always make sure you know what it is before you eat it, however .
PS: Not sure of the second one...
If you were in NZ I'd say Rumex crispus for the first one.
The second one... if it's a spurge it will have white sap when you break it.
If it helps, I am in southern China, quite near Shanghai.

we call the first dock and the second cobblers peg /fleabane ie rumex brownii and erigeron bonariensis
cows dont freely chose to eat the fleabane but sheep quite like it
To ID to species you need to look at things like seed shape. But for chook food, I'd say go ahead even though you probably only know the genus (Rumex). They'll probably eat the greens too.
The plant is medicinal as well (including the root).
