Temporary bbq
Hi, can anyone point me in the right direction or advise on some plans to build a wood burning bbq. I would like to make it of cement blocks or similar large material with a plate to build the fire on and a metal sheet to cook on.
The reason I want it to be temporary is we will be building a new house and I would like to take the bbq with me.
Any ideas?

44 gal drum cut in half longways....plate or grill top...can get real fancy with chimneys etc...easy to move.

I had not thought of that, sounds pretty easy to construct once one has the drum.

You can make your barbecue out of bricks/blocks, just dont cement them together [or make it high]. I have a carpenter pal who I have seen do that at two houses and he plays round with it till he gets it right and then creates the masterpiece - well that is the plan.
What he is looking for is how the smoke carries because he likes it near the back door and verandah but doesnt want to smoke the house out. He makes one with a fairly long narrow pit so he can feed long branches in one end. He also works out where the airholes should be and builds the back wall at least twice the height of the front so it reflects heat.
His current one has been there for about 4 years and is still temporary although he finished an attached brick/concrete top work table which acts as a wind deflector. It wouldnt win any prizes but it works beautifully.
Easy way to get started and very portable.

Thanks floot - it looks like a question of getting the blocks together and trying to build a model (?). The air spaces - would they be along the sides of the 'fire box'? Perhaps half bricks there would do it. I had not thought of a chimney - now I am trying to remember how our old one worked, maybe the smoke just came out of the upper back of the fire box. Well, this is getting me closer to having a design.
