Question Another excuse not to weed By Anna Bowen

    interesting essay
Rayner talks about the way in which our bodies can harbor accumulated stress over time, just like the earth, that can boil over suddenly. The idea of permaculture is that it’s a way of continuing to engage with and cultivate the earth but in a way that is more closely aligned to the natural systems of the environment – an idea sometimes called “biomimicry”. And, as Rayner puts it, “permaculture principles are expressly designed to help ease ourselves back down from the high plateau of energy use that we’re on now, and help move us down to a lower energy use, more ecologically compatible society.”

It's interesting to read about someone getting such heavy pressure from friends and neighbors about how to manage her yard. I've never gotten a single suggestion about how to manage my yard.....

A friend of mine has decided to let most of her lawn just grow with a tidy mown strip to the front door and alittle round patch in the middle of the back yard.
She is seriously considering putting a notice out by her letter box explaining that this is being done to allow a micro climate to occur specifically for birds and insects due to the fact that they have so few undisturbed habitats.

Apparently her section used to be old farm land and there was a point where she wasnt able to mow her lawn and had some interesting old fashioned plants pop up.

We are going to go through my seed box and look for any thing that might be suitable for her to put in.
She was going to use wild carrot seed til I pointed out that if she does then it will cross with her eating carrots and make them useless for next year.

Personally, I think she is being quite brave to even think of doing this, cos her council is the sort that will send you a nasty letter if they think you are lowering the tone of the neighbourhood.

Dont know how I have got away with it on the front side garden, maybe because its higher than the road and touristy people and councillors cant really see it too well when they wizz past.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it...
