    for paka,

paka, i'd have to say the hobbit comes closest to replicating a cave, dunno how it would go a cement slab in our summer, on land that has no slope to build into, but all that timber, i can hear the pest treatment guy rubbing his hands and the termites polishing up the silver ware, would cost a fortune to pay a builder to do it and they'd never be able to give you a quote over here as they simply don't know enough. ours cost app' $1k AUD per square meter that includes all things we had to do lining, plumbing, soil testing oodles of local council charges to we budgeted $7k for those charges, then there is always those little hidden extras. for me i'll stick to what we have researched for here fire and termite proof.

if you chose one of these would it be the head or the heart at play? or being seen to be different?

Mine is a skillion, or flat, and it made it hard to insulate. I know that much. And silly me insulated well before the insulation rebate plus I listened to a builder who said foil wasn't needed and now it's warmer in Winter and freakishly hot in Summer. So much so, I vented each room with a whirlybird but because the roof is flat, and the insulation filled the space, I needed 6 (six!) whirlybirds to pull the air out, one above each vent. You can now see the whirlybirds from space.

    g'day S.O.P,

we had no issues but then we design homes to be full open plan and if really needed only partition walls, did you have a look at our feature on our web site?

we put sisalation paper then now we used bubble aluminium foil, put on before teh roof, then we pink batts, in the skillion design we used 4 spinners (mistake0 really you compromise the roof integrity adding things in, would have been better using 4 blade louvres along the front up high. the spinners worked bu we had registers that allowed us to shut 3 off for winter, the vents had no ceiling space to ventilate they vented the house. same here, if we go for a vent. our rear wall was 3 meters high

got some inspiration from an architect up darwin way who built same except his front wall was 6 meters high, and all glass. got a bit scared but should also have had more glass go from cosy to snug or vica versa. looked at those warm-house/cool-house designs don't reckon they would deliver simply and would be heaps costlier. this one everyone could afford.

    anyhow keep in touch.

I was just conversing with someone from Morocco, whose friend built a cob home in Seattle area, and this place came up. Check out the amazing 2 story building right on the front page.

Keep in mind, they (we) are in a temperate rainforest where winds go in excess of 70mph every winter.
