Cool Hi, I think I might be the youngest person here!!!

Hey, my name's Jeremy Gillen and I’m 14 years old and I live in Alice Springs. I’m interested in long distance running, triathlon, rock climbing, chess, permaculture, appropriate technology, alternative building and climate change as well as all the other problems the world has got itself into!

My dad suggested I learn about permaculture so I read Rosemary Morrow’s ‘Earthusers guide to permaculture’ and I loved it. I’m now trying to get hold of ‘permaculture: a designers manual’.

At the moment I’m designing and building a desk for myself and trying to start a youth environment network here in Alice. I’m just starting the process of redesigning my family’s backyard along the permaculture principles. If anyone has any knowledge of Central Australian plants and animals or permaculture strategies that might work here then I'd love some help.

Welcome Jeremy! Wish I had started learning permaculture when I was a teenager, it's much harder when you have to unlearn bad habits. It's great that your folks let you have the run of the yard to play permaculture in. Try the local library for the Designer's Manual. There's a section for each climate type in there which will give you some ideas about how to approach your place.

    G'day Jeremy

    Welcome to the PRI Forum.

You certainly are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I have visited the 'Centre' often, and each time I come away with a new perspective on life.

Concerning the acquisition of local 'knowledge': If you have not already done so (as I suspect you may have), check out the following:

    Alice Springs Desert Park

    Desert Knowledge Australia

    Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre

You, and your peers, are doing some great stuff. Keep up the good work!

    Cheerio, Markos.

    Hey Jeremy,

welcome from another newbie. Love that you get to redesign the garden, that'd be so much fun!
