this is a popular vid

but I have a problem with it.

It is a well known fact that if change is slow enough, it becomes practically unnoticeable.
The Herd are practised at adapting life's little expectations to suit such confines as society imposes - all part of the social contract.

but Alvin Tofler alerted us via " Future Shock " ( some time in the 80's?) that the ever increasing pace of change is going to be too much for some.

in this video, i see the herd doing some sort of Zen,,,and in their praiseworthy efforts to accept the unchangeable. completely miss the fact that an intolerable situation needs changing - not acceptance.

the social exchanges highlighted in the vid are real life piss off's...sure, it is good for the Herd to avoid road rage, but would it not be better if the traffic congestion at the root of the problem was fixed, instead of life coaching sufferers to cope?

i have no recourse but to state my strongest belief that there is water, and there is water.
lots of different types of water.
and,
frankly some of it is crap.
dirty polluted over used and under cleaned water.
real unnatural dangerous water.

it serves nobodies interest to just adopt the mantra - This is Water.
and so this video fails.

the metaphor is dodgy and the zen feel good is the Herd being trained to roll over to the next subtraction from their quality of life.

feel good pop pulp that enthrals almost 5 million souls who take solace from the fact that there is jack they can do with the outer, and it all gets down to managing the inner.

it's why Buddhism doesn't really flourish amid first world affluence - not enough suffering.
well maybe that is a bit past tense -
when clearly the video appeals to the Buddhist to make the best of the situation....

this peeves those of us looking forward to change.
we don't want comfy in crap

and those of us that leapt...know for a fact that Water is way way way more than just Water.
or can be.

Last year, I planted a vegetable garden. I was being bit by something that I was unable to see after being bit but stung and resembled a mosquito bite. I know it was not a mosquito but whatever these things were, would bite any exposed skin within 30sec to 1min with over 5 to 10 bites. It got to the point where I neglected my crops because it was too miserable to go out there. Anyone have any idea where these bites are coming from??

I am curious to know an estimate of how much of their own food people on the forum grow. Maybe as a rough percentage of calories? And then to compare this with how many hours spent on growing food? And maybe how old the garden is?

I realise there is a lot more to permaculture than gardening, and there is a lot more to gardening than growing food, and a lot more to growing food than just producing calories.

Just curious though, any replies will be appreciated.

(I spend 6-10 hours a week in the garden, my garden is almost a year old, and I'd estimate I get around 10-15% of calories from the garden).

I was able to go the closest Farmer's Market last Saturday (100kms away) for the first time. Unfortunately it was raining and not under cover so our time there was limited.
As we sheltered under the overhang of a building there was a stall there selling pomegranates but it was unattended. Shortly I was surprised to see one of my neighbours approach who was selling the pomegranates. I did not realise their orchard was old enough for a crop. I was excited until she said they only had a small crop due to the beetles (remember my posts about the cockchafer beetle plague). She said they boom sprayed the crop to save some but would need to 'nuke' the ground in winter/spring to kill the grub larvae in the soil. My heart sank. She gave me a couple to try which I scrubbed and used and they were good. Don't think I want to buy more next season after they grow in soil that has been 'nuked'. :(
If we hadn't known each other and were chatting I probably would have just bought some without finding out about the pesticides etc. Guess that's a lesson learnt.

One highlight was a great little stand 'Burma Organic Produce' grown by local resettled migrants. Hope to support them during the winter when my own garden is a bit unproductive. :)
