Here's a talk given by Starhawk to the Harvard Divinity School in March.

Marko and I had a discussion a few times about Pc and spirituality and whether they mix, and whether Starhawk's way of teaching contributes to or undermines Pc given the apparent unscientific nature of spirituality.

She doesn't address that issue, but gives a lovely introduction to the ethics and principles of permaculture to her theological audience. My favourite bits were when she said that Pc has more projects on the ground than the UN, and her application of permaculture principles to geopolitics (she is a seasoned anti-globalisation activist, but presents this work within the positive, solutions-focussed framework of Pc).

So many dumb decisions were made by early pioneers when exploiting the land for profit. Sadly, a country's citizens generally take their cues from their own governments who haven't always made the best decisions. For those familiar with Highway 74 from Hemet CA to Idyllwild CA, you most likely are unaware of an ecological disaster that most folks know nothing about and that cannot be found in the historical records. It was the decision when road building and paving Highway 74 to divert a major stream to avoid having to build a bridge. Surely this cut expenses drastically. Anyway, I discovered this mess back in 1982/83, but only until recently have documented it with a couple of friends. The history though is interesting and it started with observing specific plant anomalies in Nature.

The first post was a preview post of a plant I have never in my life seen so large. I really would like some cuttings or seed from this one. The second link is the main article and history behind my discovery.

Quote:

"...European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) researchers have discovered a previously unknown viral gene that is known as “Gene VI.” (1) It’s found in most prominent GMO crops, and can disrupt the biological functions within living organisms. What do you expect? Genetically Modified Organisms contain a number of cell altering chemicals, that’s what chemicals do. Don’t forget about the chemicals used to spray the crops as well. Certain corn crops were found to contain the gene that creates physical mutation within the body. Roundup-Ready soybeans were also found to contain the gene. Don’t forget about NK603, which was recently linked to the development of mass tumors in rats. (2)

This Gene helps to assemble virus particles that inhibit the natural defense of the cellular system and produces proteins that are harmful. The most common genetic regulatory sequence in commercial GMOs also encodes a significant fragment of this viral gene. The presence of this “hidden” gene is likely to result in unintended phenotypic changes (DNA mutations.) Of the 86 different transgenic events (unique insertions of foreign DNA) commercialized and mass marketed today, 54 in the United States contain some of the harmful Gene V1 within them..."

For almost 24 years I was at odds with the Biologists up in the San Bernardino Forest in and around the San Jacinto Mountains with regards Prescribed or Control Burns and Forest rehabilitation methods and many of them were my friends and colleagues. I went ahead against this Orthodoxy and replicated what Nature did anyway. I have been over in the United States visiting my Mum and documenting numerous things from the past and most of these have turned out to be successes which really to me are NOT all that amazing as far as anything I take credit for, but rather how things truly operate out in the wild and making practical applications in real life situations like Habitat restoration, landscaping or even gardening. This post today and the photos documenting the final 30 years results show what happen when one out of five people replicated Nature and the others didn't. Only one property owner today has a forest on his five acre parcel. Aussies from dry areas will appreciate this.

Went with my younger son and his girlfriend to our regional centre. We were wandering around in Kmart and they went off while I went to the home wares section.
I grabbed a toasted sandwich maker for our campervan.
When I re-united with the kids I said 'guess how much this is?', holding up the sandwich maker. 'Twenty bucks' son ventures.
'Eight dollars', I reply. He is totally shocked at the low price.
'That actually makes me feel sick' he says. I put the sandwich maker down on a stool near the shoes aisles and we leave.

What is the real environmental and humanitarian cost of an $8 sandwich maker?
:(
