Hi There - My name is Wendy and I moved from the suburbs out to 5.5 acres at Hoddles Creek (Vic) a couple of yrs ago. I've been reading about permaculture for a few yrs now and have a vague grasp of what it's all about. Our block is basically divided into house block, large grassed area which has a fall towrds a natural dam site (no dam yet) and what I call the wholesale area - this is where our pedecessors had poly tunnels & shade structures as well as a paddock of camelias which they propogated using said igloos etc & sold on a wholesale basis. All of the areas under shade/plastic are gravel/sanded as per std retail nurseries and grow a great deal of weed & blackberries. Since moving in I have converted some of the shade area to chook, geese & bunny homes - I have two bee hives overlooking the polytunnel (which has no poly but is about to get some) and in the process of building an aquaponics setup with the fish tanks under shade and the grow beds in the open & next to that a wicking bed which will take the grey water from the house and provide a home for veg that doesn't grow well in aquaponics eg. potatoes.

You sound well on the way Wendy - Welcome.
Please be sure to post some photos so we can see you setup. There are also discussion groups in the "community" section on aquaponics - drop by if you find them.

G'day Wendy

Welcome to the PRI Forum.

It reads like you have enough happening to keep you busy for quite a while. I would think that after reading about it for a 'few years', your 'grasp of' permaculture would be pretty solid. Have you come across any of Holmgren's work in any of your reading? If not, the following is a great place to begin:

Cheerio, for now, Markos

Hi Wendy, another Victorian here - Latrobe Valley. Hoping to start 5 acres very soon. It, too has a bank of poly tunnels, rather neglected, and it will be the initial Chook Home while we build Fowl Town and Chook Haven. It should help get rid of some of the weeds and pests. Talking about it is making it so real...
