Hello everybody. :handshake:
I've always been a fan of alternative lifestyle but recently I have been thinking about grassroots and permaculture constantly. My dream is to sell all of my objects and move to a commune near Mullumbimbi or Nimbin and live off the fat of the land, but currently I'm trapped in suburbia.
This looks like a great place.

Welcome Land Cow!
I think you'll find many kindred spirits here ... although I'm finding that "living off the fat of the land" takes a lot of hard work too!

Hi Land Cow, welcome to the refugee camp.
My advice to you would be to get really clear about what it is you are looking for, and what it is you are really wanting to delete from your lifestyle. Dreams like yours have to come from somewhere, so unless you have actually experienced 'living off the fat of the land' I suspect that what you are imagining is something more like a 'postcard'. I use the metaphor of a postcard because in most cases postcards have photos that are taken on a particularly nice day, from a particularly favourable angle and usually by a photographer who has some sense of what she is doing. Sometimes you get lucky and turn up at your holiday destination on just such a day, but more often you will turn up and find a 'normal' day - the shiny white beach with not a soul on it is blisteringly hot, there are stingers in the water, the flies are unbearable and the place is over run by tourists. (Thank goodness you can retreat to your air-conditioned cabin and in house movies). I don't say that stuff to discourage, but to prepare you for a more realistic picture of what living off the land can be like. But if you're like the rest of us suckers, you'll do it anyway, because you know you have to.
I say sell all your stuff, move to a commune if that is what your heart yearns for. As for being 'trapped in suburbia' I say bollocks (unless you are literally locked in a cage, in which case I apologise). It's that sort of thinking that breaks my heart, because unless people see that it is up to them, that they have to make more than a token sacrifice - especially those that 'know' - then as Kimbo says this ship is already sunk. It most probably already is, so why waste the time you have left rotting from the inside out in suburbia.
Thoughts and desires amount to nothing if you fail to take action - Me 2003

hi,
my observation is the land is not fat.....it is more anorexic than meets the eye.
fattening the land is a challenge, some succeed.
you may not be aware of a new 'model' that enables you to have what you want now...
no waiting, and lots of ownership, but free.
this model involves your 'membership' of 'associations' that have as part of their deal with members;
the right of members to live on the associations dirt,,,where you may be required to pay some rent, or do some group endeavour....
but this occurs over possibly several physical locations, even interstate.
you end up 'owning' the right to live on several properties, where you can do lots of things, everything!...including building homes and exploring alternatives.
but you do not buy this;
you have all you need to achieve this now - yourself.
buying it is a recipe for problems,,,unless you are flush enough to have no debt.
still, if you are flush don't blow your quid buying a share.
taking the journey pays for the journey....just take it.
advertise your availability,,,you can do it here,,,,but a local targetting works.
these associations are little incorporated bodies with a stated 'interest', a constitution and inc. after their names.
they are created by people with land who realise they have more than they can do justice to....and as they are cool and alternative types....they realise that sharing with like mindeds would bring a win for all.
and your quid does not re-invent the wheel....the properties exist, the stuff you are looking for is available........desperately available......so many players hit the wall on their own, and so many communes shoot themselves in the foot with 'ownership issues'.
cheers

I get a lot of people asking me "do you do triathlons?"
I don't ... I look like this because I "live off the fat of the land" as you put it. :)
Good luck in following your dreams & enjoy the Northern Rivers learning curve. It's a wild ride :)

Oh come on Kimbo ... when you get too cryptic the rest of us plebeians can't follow & that's no fun.
Go take a cold shower (OK ... wash) & then have another go. Please :)

May I quote from Aard's Wiki?
Aardwolf is primarily designed to be a very friendly MUD, one with the enjoyment of its players uppermost in the Imms' minds. To this end, you can help by finding out what the rules are and adhering to them, as everyone here is expected to treat everyone else with at least some level of decorum. See <help rules>.
I can't enjoy it if I don't understand it ... help me out here please ....?

ok sorry hel
you wiki'd aardwolf....good ground skills.
aardwolf is ofcourse a mud (multi user domain)
i mud,,,(you can use it as a verb)
mudding is addictive,,,i am addicted..."hello my name is kimberley and i have a problem"
one of the things i do when i'm going through mud withdrawal is go to here (pri forum)
here i can read and type and i get in a familiar zone....
this place, this forum is mud rehab.
sometimes, i loose it.
i'm sorry i <cast fatten> on your arse.
<cast uncurse><helenlee>
there you good now.
muds are distraction,,,,but everyone needs distraction.
most people distract using mass media, i can not do that any more because i have become re-sensitised and it freaks me out............
muds are better than a book, because you really are in it. At any given time on AArdwolf there can be over 400 people, compare that with this place....
and at aardwolf, there is politics ,,,but when you don't like a person or groups politics then you can go after them....you can kill them.
the aardwolf world is frgn massive - a new mudder is protected and supported on AArdwolf.....this is not common.
this is all text based, no pictures---but so is this place in the main.
one uses a 'client' to interact with the mud online....it makes it easier...
clients are downloadable, free.
the thing with muds, is it takes some time to develop your skill in 'reading' scrolling screens of coloured text.....it is all in knowing what not to read.
it is the sort of thing that i can go slow at....when i am grouped with others and we hit some other group i have a job to do which i always fuck up....and people die.....but at aardwolf, you can get your body and your stuff back and keep on going.....
the stuff you have is what determines your relative power/status....
loosing it can hurt,,,you can easy loose stuff.
when a group is engaging another ; it is intense.
fully wild.
be clear on this; a story, unfolding around you full of fear and adventure and you are reading and controlling yourself in this story...
it is huge. ...

at Aardwolf; there is this learning curve that just gives everyone the shits....but it must be and it takes time.....no one takes the time and everyone gets buffed up by mates just like in the real world.
if you were to go to the trouble to create a character ( this is the single most important thing you will ever have to do on aardwolf ),,,choose as though your life depended upon it, it does.
i would see to it that you were buffed - decked out, slipped some protection and maybe, just maybe i'd let you follow behind....haha.
my kid did this to me.
one of mine was a mud coder,,,the sucker latched onto muds at about 11 and became something too weird (internationally famous - in the context of that circle)
so, that is why i do it....
knowing of it, and perceiving something for me there, i just told him...do it, next thing my client is tweaked, i'm buffed, and getting action.
pull billy, kill.......it works for me.
cheers

i'm buffed, and getting action.
pull billy, kill.......it works for me.
I'm buffed ... not getting any action at the mo, but when I do it won't be on the freakin computer man :)
Orchy bottles get hurled off the verandah at my house (so do powerade ... yours looks more like a powerade)
I can't even kill a chook let alone a complete character ... if I could I wouldn't need no man.
How do you know what Landy likes?
