Last year we moved from Darwin to a 4 acre block in the Southern Highlands of NSW (Oz). We have always been interested in Permaculture and decide that this block was going to get the treatment!

Seeing as how we have a nice sloping block that falls to a flat area with a dam, the first thing we did was to swale the upper slopes and make sure that none our our precious water went to waste. Planted a heap of deciduous and fruit trees for the leaf litter (and we love the autumn colour). Got us some chooks and ducks.

Now my next project is to put in a gravel / reed bed system to filter the stinky duck pond (which at the moment is a bathtub). I had visions of running the duck pond water to an aquaponics system but have read some disturbing posts about e-coli getting into the plants. So maybe start out trying to get the water cleaner and see how we go. Any suggestions or comments about doing this would be great!

Anyway glad to be here :o

Glad you have joined us.
It is very important that we clean our water. Good luck and think about filters plants and oxygen - they will be you friend.

Welcome Ozgal :)
That is quite a change in climate!
I hope you have some thermal underwear for the S. Highlands Winter!

It sounds like you have made a great start. Get the water organised and the rest will follow.
Let us know if we can help.
