Two of the Monsanto GM corn species produce their own "novel" insecticides! From the article:

"Our analysis clearly reveals for the 3 GMOs new side effects linked with GM maize consumption, which were sex- and often dose-dependent. Effects were mostly associated with the kidney and liver, the dietary detoxifying organs, although different between the 3 GMOs. Other effects were also noticed in the heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system. We conclude that these data highlight signs of hepatorenal toxicity, possibly due to the new pesticides specific to each GM corn. In addition, unintended direct or indirect metabolic consequences of the genetic modification cannot be excluded."

"One corn (NK 603) has been genetically engineered to tolerate the broad spectrum herbicide Roundup and thus contains residues of this formulation. The two other types of GM maize studied produce two different new insecticides namely modified versions of Cry1Ab (MON 810) and Cry3Bb1 (MON 863) Bacillus thuringiensis-derived proteins. Therefore, all these three GM maize contain novel pesticide residues that will be present in food and feed."

I was OK with Monsanto using the bacillus bacteria gene/DNA in Cotton, as here, the crop was drenched in pesticide and this was destroying people and the environment. The genetic tinkering I thought was the lesser of two evils.
It never occurred to me that anyone would be insane enough to put a pesticide-generating bit of DNA in a food crop. Are they mad?

It is risky enough crossing two life forms that have been separate for eons (insect and plant). Crumbs, we have only JUST worked out what some DNA does and mapped some genomes. We are like 'Babes in the Woods' genetic-knowledge wise; yet we play with the building blocks of life like we invented it, like it was ours to command.
I am horrified, not by the poisonings but the thinking behind the new Frankenstein "hybrids" (or should that be 'new life forms'? "Hybrid" just doesn't seem to cut it anymore).

... another brick in the road.

Chemical companies should be called "Forced Evolutionists". Each generation of all living things is being manipulated through these ridiculous ideas. Plants are being manipulated through science, Animal genes (including us) are being affected through consumption of GMO food as well as direct contact with chemicals, which weakens our immune system. Animals themselves are even being GMed to produce more milk or meat.

Its laughable to think companies believe they can keep a patent on plants. Within a few years all species of corn, canola etc will have some genetic trait of the GMO variety. Even with all efforts to produce infertile seeds in crops.

Here is yet another example of the difference between Liberalism and Greed.

Agreed Millie Consumerism /unbridled-capitalism has almost destroyed the planet already.

I guess Monsanto will argue that all, or at least most, plants produce some chemical that protects it against predators. Some of these, like nicotine, could be toxic to us in large doses. Yet it seems to me that we have evolved a gut that can deal with plant poisons. Especially those that have been part of our diet for thousands of years.
ISTM we deal much less effectively with the toxins produced by bacteria. To take a bacteria made toxin and put it in our food supply seems the height of folly.

"Forced Evolution" interesting description. I wonder what Darwin would have made of that?

Its a bit like a truck hitting you at 5km per hour and a truck hitting you at 100km per our. Our bodies evolve to cope with natural evolution (5km per hour) compared to GMO, Chemicals etc, that take a natural 1000 year progression and make it happen overnight (100km per hour).

When the body begins to repel things its not used to cell structure changes. When cells are confused or stressed they can produce more than required or become deformed. Cancer is just one of many results.

Yes they are completely mad.

Mad and uncaring. Its not just the victims who get to eat their products or those who have to live in the vicinity absorbing all the fall out..
but their own grandchildren are going to suffer for their greed.

I'm sure they know that theirproducts are completely treasonous but they keep going.
True sign of mad and downright evil

In a bid to establish some guerrilla warfare in this whole GMO debate, I have started informing every religious fundamentalist I meet, that to Monsanto, GMO means "God Move Over" - gr8 way to get them arced up about the issue.

Green light for GM canola in WA

By greg muller

Thursday, 28/01/2010

Western Australia has given to green light to farmers wanting to grow genetically modified canola.

On Monday the WA Agriculture minister Terry Redman, announced the end of scientific trials clearing the way for GM crops to be grown commercially.

But there are claims the WA government us pressuring researchers who are looking into genetically modified material.

In this report: Terry Redman, Western Australia Minister for Agriculture and Food; Dr Judy Carman, director of the Institute of Health and Environmental Research; Peter O'Keefe, country lead for Monsanto Aust
