has anyone been through the process of organic certification. i've been doing my research and have contacted nasaa, but as yet no reply to the following question:
instead of paying for the whole process now - and paying an annual fee: am more looking at development of market garden or berry farm in five years> are there a set of national guidelines to follow that make the certification process as simple and easy as possible once you decide to?
basically - don't want to make any mistakes that may cost us in the long term.

i haven't gone through the process myself, yet!, but can offer some advice.
i have drilled organic farmers about their Organic Certification(OC)and the process they went through and there ongoing processes.
basically you need to start with uncontaminated soil.... this is the biggest thing you need to be concerned with!! .... the other major factor is not to use town water long term b/c tests will remove your OC b/c of chlorine and such... we have a situation in some of the outer suburbs of Brisbane where market gardners, especially organic farmers, are selling their lands to housing developers b/c of water costs and not being able to be certified b/c of the water.
you should be able to get some tests of your land done without having to sign up to a long term commitment, especially if you are five years off going commercial. That would be the only thing i would do myself.... then when i am ready to go commercial then fork out the dollars for the certification.
The farmers i have spoken to say it is worth the money you spend.... their endorsement goes a long way in selling your product and getting respectability in the organic community.
One has said to me that when tests came back to him as unfavourable b/c of using town water b/c of the recent drought that they(BFA) helped him with how to rectify his situation... so there is hope that they aren't just after your money.
if the soil you have is contaminated to start with they should also be able to tell you whether you can reverse it and roughly how long it will take, and what things you can do to help.

that is the sort of info i am after...not having any connection to town water is obviously a good start - but the land has probably been used for some sheep grazing - and i'd be interested what impact this may have had.
i'll keep asking questions and chasing people up.
