Hi everyone,

I look forward to being a part of this forum. I live on an 11 acre bush property in the suburb of Wandi which is about 25km south of Perth and I'm trying to grow vegetables in bassendean soil which has been classed as the poorest in the world. So I have an uphill battle but I'm hoping to be successful. I'm trying to go as organic as I can but I've been taken for a ride by some pests which I hope I can keep under control. Luckily i don't have big snails...yet.

Cheers,
Fred

Welcome Wandifred!

Sounds like you've set yourself a challenge! Are you able to add organic matter to your bassendean soil to begin improvements in your garden?

G'day Fred

Welcome to the PRI Forum.

Josh Byrne (of Gardening Australia fame) has given great advice in the past about how one can establish a food garden on the sandy soils of Perth. You can find all of Josh's 'Fact Sheets' on the ABC website (see: http://search.abc.net.au/search/search. ... fact+sheet (http://search.abc.net.au/search/search.cgi?collection=tv&query=permaculture+fact+sheet)).

Concerning the snails: Beer traps work well, and you get to have a drink while you set your traps (see: http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/factsh ... native/487 (http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/factsheets/Gardening-Tips-Books-Techniques-and-Tools/Beer-Snail-Trap---The-French-Alternative/487)).

Cheerio, and don't forget to let us know how you get on, Marko.

G'day
welcome to the forum. Sounds like you need lots of organic matter, which seems to be the solution for just about any type of soil.
I'm sure if you specified your pests problem in an appropriate section of the forum that there would be plenty who could offer advice
let us know how you go
cheers
