how to fit non-return value to pump

Got a Garden Mate 800W garden pump but instructions are unclear on the fitting of the non-return valve.

Q: Does the non-return valve fit onto the pump's outlet or inlet ?

Q: Are non-return valves still required when the pump is fitted to a stand-alone water tank and not attached to any house water mains ?

Welcome to the PRI Forum.

In response to your first question: Generally speaking, non-return or check valves are fitted in-line and immediately before the pump (or on the inlet side of the pump). This positioning of the check valve always insures that the pump is 'primed', and ready to go.

Second question: Check valves are relatively cheap, and are therefore a good way of insuring you get the ultimate performance out of your pump, no matter what the application, and they can help reduce 'hammering', too.
