sorry guys,,,you old timers that have talked this topic out...
but I had to search too deeply for it and with the new traffic they just gotta be mentioned again. all fresh like :D

Earthships; dam they're cool...
You can have all the bits like your own power & water systems, a dwelling-solar passive ra ra ra. you could have insulation like in a straw bale house and thermal mass of rammed earth...

but it isn't an 'Earthship' - is it?....no it is just some hippy thing..
Earthships gggrrrrrrr. those babies are way cool, mate 8)

If I was younger, like 30 years younger...I'd do that 'shit' ,,,I would sacrifice my back and my knees,,I'd fill those tyres man.
Because as every one knows Earthships are just so cool.
and cute,,real cute.

Yeah, the earthships really are cool. I was absolutely in love with them when I first came across them, probably like most of us here. Love the designs, the recycling, the look, the whole 'vibe'.

But despite all the attractive stuff, hardly anyone is building them. And I don't think it's all the fault of the nasty council building inspector.

All of the issues with toxic waste disposal, chemical leakage etc seem to be a major sticking point. I haven't seen anyone address that issue properly and that's probably the major problem with these things.

They are beautiful though aren't they. :)

Ah yes, earthships are one of my favorite things. What I really like about them is their integrated designs, their stacked functions. I've convinced myself that one need not build of old tires and salvaged bottles and cans to incorporate the integrated systems. The original earthships were built in New Mexico and their thick earthen walls worked well in that moderate climate. But I've read of earthships built in less appropriate places (cold winter climates) where, without any insulation, they became essentially cold caves.

Where I live, the winters are far to cold for a traditional earthship. But I have dreams building an earth sheltered home that includes built-in water collection, storage, and gravity pressure. Planned grey water filtration through an attached greenhouse. Solar thermal and PV recessed into the exterior. And perhaps some of the graceful curved walls and turreted roof features that earthships themselves are famous for. :D
