View Full Version : Solar Cookery (parabolic)

I recently scavenged a big old satellite dish that I want to convert into a solar cooker. Anyone done it? Its not exactly a parabola, but perhaps I could add some wings onto it...

sounds great. haven't done it - but do recall an artciel, and maybe even design in a back issue of earth garden - you may want to check their website - they have a list of back issues....and see if you can find it.

well, thanks for the tip about eg mag, I didn't actually find any articles regarding solar cookers but it was nice to visit their site and mediated some of my homesickness.
one of my main challenges has been how to mount the dish/solar collector in such a way that it is easy to point at the sun throughout the day. we are now looking at finding a wheel rim or a 44 gallon drum to balance/rotate it on...
i did finally come across a good solar cooker plans site via "journey to forever" if anyone else out there is interested in parabolic solar cooking.
there were no recycled satellite dishes on there, but lots of cool plans, and a good idea for testing the focal area, which is to use a laser beam! now i just have to find a cheap laser beam key ring thingy and i'm cooking with uh..., the sun. whoo-hoo!
