Hello,
I am a Nuffield farming scholar from the UK, and am soon to embark on a trip to Auz & NZ. (7th Nov - 12th Dec).

My main research topic is 'growing exotic vegetables in the UK', with a view to engaging people who are not usually involved in agriculture and growing in general, e.g. ethnic minority communities.

But, I am also very interested in permaculture, and sustainable food and farming in general. I work for Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming in London (see http://www.sustainweb.org for further details), and am involved in the local food movement there.

So, I was wondering if you had any ideas of interesting places, or people I should see whilst I am in your neck of the woods, I would be most grateful!

(the main areas I will be visiting are Sydney, Boggabri, Adelaide, Melbourne, (with trips out of the cities), Tassie, and then both NZ- N and S Islands).

Best wishes!
Emma

Hi Emma,

Send me a private message and I'll get you in touch with my friend Tomoko. She visited a bunch of farms in Australia this year and would be able to recommend which are the best to see. If you are going to NZ, I only hear good things about Joe and Trish Polaischer's Rainbow Valley Farms...

If you get up to Brisbane try the Northey Street Community Farm, they have a web site.
Couple years ago they had a sucessfull project involving refugee community growing their native vegetables. It was a short term project from what I heard....stopped as the refugees became intergrated into the broader community but they were very happy with the project.
Cheers
