For anyone interested, here's what I've been up to lately (http://permaculturetokyo.blogspot.com/2006/06/progress-update-work-on-barnes-home.html). More updates to follow when things get interesting...

That looks a lot better than how it started Douglas! That's your front yard I assume? What's the planting idea after a green manure crop? Or is the clover just to keep this section as a low maintenance area?

Well, it's an urban Toronto home, so most of the images are of the back. The front is even smaller. There are a few things planted in the front, but it needs more work.

Sorry Douglas, I assumed it was your place forgetting that you're in that line of work. It's a very cosy little yard...best of luck with the planting etc.

Trying to get into that line of work... I am getting (over)paid for the job, but it's also a showcase for my work since I'm just starting out here.

DJEB, looks like nice work. Once the clover is up, is that for soil improvement too? Is the end result for growing a vegetable garden? It looks like the perfect space for a modified permaculture mandala design. :)

I spread kelp meal around and sheet mulched. I have samples of the original soil which I'll be testing as soon as I get soil kits.

Other than that, it's looking alright. There are worms galore, fungi nets everywhere, busy insects. The soil seems to be in good health for the time being.

We had some tomatoes from the garden last week and lettuce last night. I've also been using the herbs in cooking. Things are moving along nicely.

There are some there improvements to come - roof catchment into driplines, reflectors to improve the solar gain, and insulation.

The design was rather organic and is set up to provide maximum bed space.

In the end, it's set to be a case study for my business.
