Hi.

The 72bands post really got me thinking....

What bands / genres get the people on this forum going?

I'd love to find out.

Cheers,
Devin.

P.S. I've even heard Tezza make mention of a guitar....

26-11-2005, 11:01 PM
Anything and everything... there is not much I don't like, actually can't think of anything really...oh, except ABBA. That is worst lot of TV jingles, I've ever heard.

Someone said...can't remember who..Anything that is too stupid to say, usually ends up being sung. I think that must have been Led Zepellin's motto - but I like their sound. Just have to try not to listen to the words, or I run round all day saying, "What the...was Jimmy on about?"

Love Sinead O'Connor's protests. And still pull Melanie out...

I am lucky in that I have a kid who can play anything, and even luckier I don't mind listening to it. She pretty much makes sure the whole day is a cavalcade of music, whether she's singing or playing and we have instruments all over the farm, so she's always picking them up (when the rest of us are doing the work  ). But I can't complain, it always sounds pretty good.

Everything from Vera Lynn, Fats Domino to blues, opera, pop, metal, disco, all ballads, folk, C & W, NO JAZZ and not much Rap either. I am also a bit iffy about 70s band like Led Zepp and Pink Floyd that turn a 3 minute song into a 10 minute bang/clang thing that wont finish.

I have a collection of about 4000 hit songs over 70 years if anyone wants a song I can email it. I am also looking for a 70s aussie hit called 'Captain Zero'[the one and only super-natural hero] if anyone has it.

Particularly taken by a portugese style of music called Fado.

Tully, by Melanie did you mean Melanie Safka?

Tezza, dont try karaoke at your funeral you will upstage and piss the funeral director off.

Cheers,............ PS, I have fixed my 'signature'... :D:D

I like most music genres but I don't like much C&W. I do like Patsy Cline and George Jones. I love some classical music and some opera, particularly Madam Butterfly.

I LOVE blue grass - the really hick foot shuffling stuff from up in the appalacians.

I like Portishead, Radiohead, Bjork, Mercury Rev, some of the Killers newish CD, Eminem, Ray Charles, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, the Vines, the Pixies, REM, Blossom Dearie, Leonard Cohen, the pre-electric Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco, Deborah Conway, Beck, Captain Beefheart, The Who, but not after Keith, Foo Fighters, dandy warhols and much much more.

I'm a J's listener, and love it.... :D

With a very diverse range of likes, depending on the situation, everything from Marina Prior and Enya, through to Tool and blink 182.

some faves include :
Archie Roach (have all his albums, brilliant )
Jebadiah
Jack Johnson
Little Birdy
Missy Higgins (shame she became so popular)
Tiddas
Waifs
Eskimo Joe
Sia
Hilltop hoods
Youth group
End of fashion
Strange, all except one of the above is AUSSIE .. :D
I'll even admit to being a bit of a closet Kasey Chambers fan.

Forest, you like some coool music... Ani Difranco is an amazing woman, I know Deborah Conways white roses off by heart (I sing it in the shower  ), and do you have Nick Caves murder ballads? What a brilliant album, although it's rather dark the man has some great skills.

Turnstile, I was sent a compliation CD from a friend in the UK. Whitehouse was on it. They are absolutely mind splitting, not sure that I liked them but their singer, William Bennet seems to be a complex pandora's box. Here's a link, beware naughty words for young eyes: http://www.neox.demon.co.uk/whitehouse/

Joel, I don't have Murder Ballards but one of my sons does. Unfortately he took it to Canada with him. :( It's a fine album. Did you know Nick Cave wrote the script for the film, The Proposition. I'd love to see it but I can never be bothered going to the movies anymore. Crowds are a bit more than I can take.

Whilst you're here Turnstile...I used to have a tape of Tom Waits YEARS ago, when I was about 17. I don't know how I came to have it cos I was a big a dag then as I am now :D
Anyhew, there was a song, a really slow ballad, piano (right, he played piano??) and it was grrrrrrrrrr racking my brains here for any words at all to come to me...um, something about money in a jar maybe ...a fairy or ballerina or something on his piano..um, sorry, it won't come. Alcohol was mentioned I think...was he a boozy, maudlin singer??
ANY idea at all?? I have been wanting to find that song again for all these years...so long that I've forgotten why I liked it eh?

Edited to add: Whiskey! Not money in a jar...that'd be Billy Joel, wouldn't it??LOL

murray
28-11-2005, 07:16 PM
hey tully

is the song is "Eggs And Sausage (In A Cadillac With Susan Michelson)"?

whiskey could be "chillie".. sounds similar.. :)

------------------------------------

nighthawks at the diner
of Emma's 49er, there's a rendezvous
of strangers around the coffee urn tonight
all the gypsy hacks, the insomniacs
now the paper's been read
now the waitress said

CHORUS
eggs and sausage and a side of toast
coffee and a roll, hash browns over easy
chillie in a bowl with burgers and fries
what kind of pie?

In a graveyard charade, a late shift masquerade
2 for a quarter, dime for a dance
with Woolworth rhinestone diamond
earrings, and a sideway's glance
and now the register rings
and now the waitress sings

CHORUS

the classified section offered no direction
it's a cold caffeine in a nicotine cloud
now the touch of your fingers
lingers burning in my memory
I've been 86ed from your scheme
I'm in a melodramatic nocturnal scene
I'm a refugee from a disconcerted affair
as the lead pipe morning falls
and the waitress calls

CHORUS

~Tullymoor~

Hey Murray, thanks heaps, but nope, don't recognise ANY of those words.. :(
I think I'll go Google his lyrics and wade my way through them til I find it. It's bugging the bejeebies outa me now....well, has been for a few decades really :?

What I'm worried about is that when *do* find it, it'll have zip to do with the clues I gave hehehe

~Tullymoor~
28-11-2005, 07:44 PM
Ok, getting closer. I'm working thru his songs a-z and just got to H...I am pretty sure Heart Attack and Vine was the name of the album...was that an album?? If so, I THINK it was the last song.
Any guesses before I find it??? The prize is some comfrey root LOL just to keep it permie related you know

~Tullymoor~
28-11-2005, 07:55 PM
<cough> Found it...well, found one I remember I loved...maybe I loved two, or even more...maybe I meant lullabys/kid's story lines, not a ballerina/pixie...will keep looking.
So, is this song from Heart Attack and Vine? reckon you can buy it on CD these days??

On the Nickel

sticks and stones will break my bones,
but i always will be true, and when
your mama is dead and gone,
i'll sing this lullabye just for you,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never comb their hair,
well they're lined up all around the block,
on the nickel over there.

so you better bring a bucket,
there is a hole in the pail,
and if you don't get my letter,
then you'll know that i'm in jail,
and what becomes of all the little boys,
who never say their prayers,
well they're sleepin' like a baby,
on the nickel over there.

and if you chew tobacco, and wish upon a star,
well you'll find out where the scarecrows sit,
just like punchlines between the cars,
and i know a place where a royal flush,
can never beat a pair, and even thomas jefferson,
is on the nickel over there.

so ring around the rosie, you're sleepin' in the rain,
and you're always late for supper,
and man you let me down again,
i thought i heard a mockingbird, roosevelt knows where,
you can skip the light, with grady tuck,
on the nickel over there.

so what becomes of all the little boys,
who run away from home,
well the world just keeps gettin' bigger,
once you get out on your own,
so here's to all the little boys,
the sandman takes you where,
you'll be sleepin' with a pillowman,
on the nickel over there.

so let's climb up through that button hole,
and we'll fall right up the stairs,
and i'll show you where the short dogs grow,
on the nickel over there.

Edited: so I don't runaway with this thread...I'm just tacking this on.
Murray, was THIS a boozy, sloooow, drawn out fabulous ballad???????????
If so, I think it's IT>>>
Mr. Siegal

I spent all my money in a mexican whorehouse,
across the street from a catholic church,
and then i wiped off my revolver,
and i buttoned up my burgundy shirt,
i shot the morning in the back,
with my red wings on,
i told the sun he'd better go back down,
and if i can find a book of matches,
i'm goin' to burn this hotel down.

you got to tell me brave captain,
why are the wicked so strong,
how do the angels get to sleep,
when the devil leaves the porchlight on.

well i dropped thirty grand on the nugget slots,
i had to sell my ass on fremont street,
and the drummer said there's sanctuary,
over at the bagdad room,
and now it's one for the money, two for the show,
three to get ready, and go man go,
i said tell me mr. siegel,
how do i get out of here.

well willard's knocked out on a bottle of heat,
drivin' dangerous curves across the dirty sheets,
he said man you ought to see her,
when her parents are gone,
man you ought to hear her when the siren's on.
you got to tell me brave captain,
why are the wicked so strong,
how do the angels get to sleep,
when the devil leaves the porchlight on.

don't you know that ain't no broken bottle,
that i picked up in my headlights,
on the other side of the nevada line,
where they live hard die young,
nd have a good lookin' corpse every time,
well the pit-boss said i should keep movin',
this is where you go when you die,
and so i shot a black beauty,
and i kissed her right between the eyes.

well willard's knocked out on a bottle of heat,
drivin' dangerous curves across the dirty sheets,
he said man you ought to see her,
when her parents are gone,
man you ought to hear her when the siren's on.

you got to tell me brave captain,
why are the wicked so strong,
how do the angels get to sleep,
when the devil leaves the porchlight on.

Added on again to say thank you Murray for the offer...do you have those songs/that album?

has any one mentioned the best band ever Midnight Oil?

~Tullymoor~
28-11-2005, 09:09 PM
Nope, but I remember seeing them live at O day at Deakin University in oh, musta been the VERY early 80's. I hated it 'cos as I said, I was a dag. I was listening to 3UZ country radio when all my friends were into 3XY!

When I was 15 my Mother arranged for me to see Meatloaf with her younger (20's ish) work mates. I'd never heard of him. The Angels were the support band, their first tour I think.....I sat ALL night with my fingers in my ears and praying it would end

grease
28-11-2005, 09:41 PM
Midnight oil weren't only brilliant because of their music and the way they presented it but I loved them most for their message and committment to a cause, be that indiginous land rights or sustainability or oppossition to the US or..... I'm not sure what 3UZ was about but if it was the same as 2RE then I simpathise, I hated the horserace calling on a saturday and the country music every other day ( I do like Slim though)

Tullymoor,

You're right, the album is Heartattack & Vine...have it right here. :D

My favourite Tom Waits recording is the bootleg "Cold Beer On A Hot Night" - recorded live in Sydney 1979.

I mentioned the Oils Grease...nobody who has seen them live could not IMO... 8)

hey fran, i thought since you're into metal you'd probably dig hardcore, have you heard any? some melbourne bands like one inch punch are cool i think they're called mid youth crisis now, my disco, the nation blue are some others...
half the bands sound like full ball metal bands except sometimes they're not singing so much about demons and angels of death (sorry thats all i've heard 'em sing about  ) but more world/social politics.
i'm pretty sure theres a thriving local scene in vic.

heysuess, I just noticed your into all that great 80's new zealand stuff. and you live in Melbourne... who are you? do you ever go see the new estate, or bands like that? any of that chapter music type stuff? you're not from Perth originally are you? Perth had the biggest following of post-VU jangly guitar bands I've ever been fortune enough to rub shoulders with. oh, what about the 3D's? tall dwarfs?

seussrules

Richard

Jangly guitar sounds rock (or pop?)! Not from Perth - Sydney originally, where virtually all Flying Nun bands were revered by anyone with taste  Loved the 3Ds (Hey Seuss and all that). Tall Dwarves one of my lesser faves. Also loved Jean Paul Sartre Experience (was a sad groupie and used to follow them 'round to all their gigs and try to strike up witty conversations about the cricket and stuff.... :? ).

I've only just skimmed over this thread but thought I'd add my bit of diverse taste too.

My all time favorite would have to be shared by Dire Straits and ACDC. Queen's up there, then it starts to get really diverse.

I love the following:

Slim Dusty (brought tears to my eyes singing Walzing Matilda at the closing ceremony.
John Farnham Absolutely love him. Great bloke, loves horses, good family man, fairdinkum aussie bloke (pommy born) that hasn't allowed fame to go to his head.
Crowded House - Great!
Aerosmith - Yay!
Van Halen (!!!) and whilst on that subject,
David Lee Roth
Anything by Mark Knopfler whether with DS or not
and whilst on the subject, Chet Atkins
REM
Stuff I've got and like:
Billy Idol
Bob Dylan
ELOElton John
MeatloafThe Sweet
Hoodoo Gurus
Hunters & Collectors (!!!)
John Williamson
Things of Stone and Wood
Paul Simon
The Wiggles
Eagles (!!!)
Eurythmics
John Mellencamp
Kiss - Oh yeah!
Led Zeppelin (!!!)
Status Quo
INXS (& Max Q)
The Beatles
and whilst on that subject
of course John Lennon
Hootie & the Blowfish *
Counting Crows *
Van Morrison
Johnny Cash
The Whitlams
Yothu Yindi ***
and for a bit of partying
Blondie
Rolf Harris
Michael Jackson
The Village People
Angels

I also like most types of Jazz and frequent the Jazz festivals when I can afford it. Also like Bluegrass and really starting to like Country, something I'd never warmed to before.

Things I hate:

Hip Hop
Dance stuff
Rap

That's about it I think.
