Getting the chicks outside....

Has anyone else had a hard time keeping chicks at a comfy temperature as you slowly brought it down to the environment outside? Any suggestions?

Oh, and does anyone else have a toy for their chooks? :D

We start by turning their lamp off for a few hours during the day, then building it up to being switched off all day, then when the time seems right we leave it off all night. By then, so long as the weather is reasonable and they have a nice cosy place to snuggle up together, they seem to do fine. If the weather is iffy we might bundle them into a box and put them indoors for a night or two.

You could also try things like putting them somewhere with the lamp on but further away, and making sure they have plenty of room to move away from the lamp to choose their own temperature. The more time they spend away from the lamp when it's on, the more I'm inclined to turn it off completely.
