I've been checking out the area I live in to see just how much native vegetation is left around here.

If you haven't seen Google Earth yet, it's a madly interesting program that you can download free from here:

Google Earth is the shizznit!

You can find me at 34degrees, 44minutes, 14.3 seconds north by 139 degrees, 35 minutes, 19.5 seconds east - and it's a high res pic... 8)

Are there no pictures over where you have brought Cobber?

I thought it covered the whole of Australia.

Forest, have a peek here: http://forums.permaculture.org.au/viewt ... ogle+earth (http://forums.permaculture.org.au/viewtopic.php?t=766&highlight=google+earth)

Same as my place - good from a distance but impossible to zoom in and get a clear shot up close :( but I was still excited to see our block from the air :D Can you pick out your land Cobber?

Cornonthecob
08-11-2005, 11:07 AM

Franceyne
08-11-2005, 12:27 PM
I can answer this - because I asked the same thing and saved the response from Dan I think...

You get to the screen you want then , you goto File --> Save Image.

Well thats how I do it.. If this doesn;t work.. You could do a screen dump..

Get the pic you want. then press down CTRL + Print Screen..

Goto your fave image editor, and File --> new,,, then paste.
Now crop the image, to your desired size...

:D

I'm not familiar with Village photos but either right click on the photo in Village to get to the properties and highlight and copy the address of your picture (some picture hosting type places have the address witten under the picture for ease)

Then paste it into a Post a reply box in here and highlight it again and click on the 'img' button up above.

Then have a look if it worked by clicking on 'Preview" down below on the Post a reply box.

Let me know how it goes - this may be a case of the blind leading the blind Forest

Yes, we are third last in a cul de sac <-- wanker name for a one lane street. That wobbly line behind our home is a creek lined with remnant rainforest. The creek is our back boundry line. It's sad that we and all the others have taken up this land but I feel privileged to live here and I never harm native animals when they wander onto "our" land.

forest

And there are chooks lurking under those trees.

We had a 15 foot python here a few weeks ago. It went along our back fence and into the neighbours yard. They killed it with a spade.

Could not start application Dan.........

What is a kmz file?

Franceyne
08-11-2005, 01:59 PM
Why Forest? A python is not going to hurt anyone - and if you live in a python's back yard you should be set up to exist with them. People make me very angry sometimes :-x

T'is a google earth location file... If you have google earth installed it should open and take you to the place I made it.

If you have google earth installed and it didn't do that ,
when clicking on the link save the file to your desktop, then right click -> open with (assuming you have XP) then in the application list select google earth, or you may have to you the browse button at the bottom of that screen to search for it... It will be c:\program files\google 'something'

same thing down here with brown snakes etc people go out of their way to kill them but I have no problem with the snakes> I have had them slither past me very fast to get away rather than strike they are a wonderful reptile and our feed area has no mice so its a win win thing :)

I have an iMac computer, so I can't get google earth. But at last I don't get viruses either.

baldcat

ah don't be so content, there a MAC viruses to ... They are called MACS ?

If anyone wants to be virus free, try Linux and an email scanner..

forest

I thought I was covered with my norton antivirus set on auto updates + auto windows updates. WRONG! I got a virus from ebay that wiped out my system. :?

I dumped Norton and am now covered with a variety of totally free software. I've been feeling pretty secure lately. :) No problems for six months. I wonder if it will last.

baldcat
09-11-2005, 10:05 AM
Nortons normally isn't to bad, however it is very resource hungry.. Symantec Corporate Edition is very good as it isn't as bloated as the house hold edition. ClamAV is a good free ware as is AVG however be a little wary as they can be a little behind in virus updates.

One thing to look out for when setting up auotmatic updates, is setting it to check everyday.. Most patterns come out every 2 weeks, however if there is an outbreak, the virus companies issue a special release. Also make sure that in your setting that if the scanner cannot clean to either quarantine, or delete it.

In most cases now, virus software isn't enough. You need spyware and exploit scanners as well.. This has been discussed on here to some lenght before..

Hey there Pete,

We too have brown snakes and red belly blacks...and tigers, but they do their thing and we do ours - the only time we get to see them is when it is really dry and they come in for a drink - I'm usually more fascinated than out for their blood. We do a lot of bush walking and remain alert and act sensibly - if you see a snake easiest thing to do is freeze - most snakes are basically deaf and their eye sight is not their major sense and they will slither on past with out even registering that you are there. It's smell and mostly movement that they pick up on. I'm horrified that people will swerve on the road to run over a snake - that is just nasty.

What sort of motorbike do you ride? I'm a curious creature :D

Cheers,
Fran.

Hi All

Our area is not in the detailed views, but you can see the Lakes around this area, the shots must have been taken when the Lake was quite empty.

Dan, you should try Avast. It's the best thing since sliced bread. My system was set up by my computer tech and he has covered me comprehensively with spyware catchers, also the new windows spy thing is excellent, and still free.

Cheers for that Forest, but I'm pretty hapy with my setup. I have hardware and software firewall, Symantec Antivirus 9 Corp edition, and all the spyware stuff you can imagine.

I have a 1.5mb connection to the internet 24/7 so I have to be a little extra cautious.. As I run a web and mail server as well.
